Pattern Design is one of my favorite things to design, but I don't get the chance to do as often as I would like.
I took a class with Fiber artist Sherri Smith and one of the assignments was to create design a fabric pattern using silkscreen.
I created the pattern digitally, and then created a paper stencil.
The pattern shows a rendition of Copihues (the Chilean national flower) and my idea was to show the red and the white varieties, the problem I encountered was that the inks did not allow me to mix the exact colors that I wanted, so I had to fix my pattern. Another challenge I faced was that there could be no white in the image, so I had to pick a color as I was working on the project. Anyone who has worked with pigments will know that the saturation looks different throughout the project, since we had to wash the fabric with cold water, there was some fading, but overall it was a successful experience for me as an artist and a designer.
